When doing business internationally, there may be times that you receive an electronic PDF document in another language, like German. Luckily, it is possible to translate and even convert PDF documents with online document translators. Certain tools, like Google Translate, allow you to upload the entire document to translate for you. However, depending on the process, you may need to convert the file from a PDF to another file type, then back into a PDF before you can finish the translation.
How to Translate a Document in Google Translate.
Google Translate is not just for typing individual words into the translation engine. Using Google Translate, you can actually upload entire documents for instantaneous translations, or use what’s called the Translator Toolkit to edit and modify a document as you translate it. Additionally, you can use Google’s translation tools to translate Google Docs as you go, which is another method we’ll cover below.
But first, in order to decide which Google tool to use when translating a document from German to English, think about what the purpose of the document you are translating is for. Are you simply trying to read and comprehend what the document says, or will this be a living document that you will need to make changes to?
If it is the former, uploading the PDF document in question to Google Translate to translate it into English will work fine. However, you have no control over the formatting or font used in the new translated document, as it will be converted to a simple transcript of what the original document says. If you want to make changes to the document, and send it back with edits, then you should use the Translator Toolkit.
Translating a PDF from German to English With Google Translate.
Here is how to use Google Translate to translate documents online.
- Go to Google Translate at translate.google.com.
- Above the translator text box, select Document instead of Text.
- Now, the text box should feature a section that says Choose Your Document.
- Click the link to Browse your computer and select the PDF file you want to translate.
- To translate German into English, select the language as German in the first box, and English in the second box. Alternatively, you can choose to Detect language, but that could leave room for error.
- Once you’ve selected your document and set your language, click Translate.
- This will create a simple text file embedded into the Google Translate website.
- To re-save the file as a PDF, use your computer’s Print shortcut to Save as PDF.
As mentioned above, the formatting on this new PDF may be very different than the original document, so if you want to make changes or re-use this document, you may want to use the Translator Toolkit method.
Translate PDF German to English With the Translator Toolkit.
To translate PDFs, German to English or otherwise, that you plan to re-use in the future, you will want to use the Translator Toolkit. However, you can’t upload your PDF directly to the Translator Toolkit, as the PDF file format is not accepted. Instead, you will first need to either convert it to a Word or Google document, or copy the entire text into a separate .txt file. Once that’s done, follow these steps:
- Under the Translator Toolkit logo in the top left, click the Upload button.
- You will be taken to another screen. From here, click the Add content to translate option under the heading What would you like to get translated?
- Choose the option to Upload file or input text if you copied the text from your PDF you wish to input.
- After choosing Upload file, click Choose File to select your converted PDF document to upload.
- Under the What languages would you like to translate into? section, choose English.
- Click Next.
- You will be prompted to select a vendor. If you want to pay, go ahead, otherwise click No thanks.
- You will be returned to the main Translator toolkit page, where you will see your document in the middle of the screen. Click on it, and a new window will pop up.
- Here, your original document will be side-by-side to the translated version, which you can now edit by clicking on the appropriate line.
- When you are done editing, go to File, then Download to download a copy of the .docx file.
You can now convert this translated revision back into a PDF in Google Docs, Microsoft Word, or through another PDF converter of your choosing.
Translate PDF German to English Directly in Google Docs.
There is a third method to use Google Translate tools to translate German to English documents directly in Google Docs. To do so, follow these steps:
- First upload your PDF to Google Drive, and right-click it to open it as a Google Docs file.
- In the menu at the top, select the Tools option, and click the Translate document tool.
- Rename the translated document, and choose what language to translate it into. In this case, choose English.
- Click the Translate button, and a new window will open with the translated document file.
Since you are translating from German to English, the typing language will default to English, but if you were translating to another language and wanted to make edits, you would want to change the typing language to the language you are editing. There are specific options for specific languages, so default to Google’s help options if you are translated a non-latin based language like Japanese or Hindi.
Other Online Options to Translate PDF German to English.
There are plenty of other online PDF translator applications, but make sure you do your research to confirm they are from reliable publishers before you choose one. Like some of the Google Translate options above, you may need to convert your PDF to a Word or Google doc before you can translate the file. It isn’t uncommon to come across PDF files in different languages. In fact, with the large global and international nature of the Internet, it’s hard not to come across one.
Whether it’s an online information brochure or an offline manual for a digital camera, a PDF file can come in all different types of languages. However, one major issue is that, in most cases, you won’t be able to read in every different language fluently. So what do you?
Luckily, if you come across a PDF file in a different language, you don’t have to stress yourself out to learn a new language with a translation dictionary or database. Here are some quick, easily accessible ways that can quickly get your PDF content into a language you can understand.
Google Translate
You may already know that Google can translate web pages, text, and phrases to and from 65 different languages. It’s as simple as adjusting your browser settings to auto-translate web pages or copying and pasting text to translate in the main Google Translate interface.
Well, translating PDF content with Google is just as simple. Once you’re on the main Google Translate page, click on the translate a document hypertext link under the main text field. You’ll get the above interface where you can click on Choose File to upload your PDF and select your target language.
However, one thing to note is that this tool is geared only towards translating the textual content; formatting and images aren’t preserved. Thus, you can expect this to work best when you need to translate and interpret large sections of text. When the translation process is done, your converted text will be available in a new tab in your browser.
Google Docs

While the above method doesn’t require a Google account, it’s quite possible that you already have one. If you do, and are already an avid user of Google Docs, then you can easily take advantage of its Translate Document functionality and use it on your uploaded PDFs.
Provided that your PDF was imported into Google Docs by selecting all the Upload settings to convert it to the Google Docs format (displayed when you upload a document), you should be able to open your PDF in the main editing interface with the main menu and formatting toolbars.
With your PDF open in Google Docs, click on Tools and select Translate Document. You can then choose your desired language and click on Translate. The results will be generated in a new PDF file with both the original and translated versions included.
DocTranslator
Though the many ads on the site and interface may put you off, DocTranslator has a solid database, using the Google Translate service to process your textual content and containing translation support for more than 50 languages. To boot, the site offers translation for a handful of popular formats without file size restrictions, including the PDF format.
Keep in mind that this tool should only be used for translating PDF content that isn’t sensitive, confidential, or in need of any sort of security at all (files such as manuals, brochures, fliers, etc.). The fine print on their privacy statement mentions that it doesn’t include PDF files. So you’ll have to use your own discretion on which PDF content you want translated.
To access the PDF translation app, click and select the PDF option on the homepage, and you’ll be able to upload your PDF and choose your target language. In contrast to Google Translate, DocTranslator works towards retaining the formatting and layout of the file, though your results may vary.
